Meet Shelby the therapy dog

Shelby Therapy dog

She is almost a year now and has been part of the Towerview care team since March 2019. Shelby is a Flat Coat Retriever pup who is a trainee Therapy dog, owned and handled by our Occupational Therapist, Louie Wilson.

Therapy Animals

Animal based therapeutic interventions can result in significant health benefits for the people we care for. There are many benefits to having a Therapy dog, such as enhancing social interactions through companionship, helping someone develop the confidence to make new friends, or restoring physical skills such as strength, balance and mobility, for example, when throwing a ball or taking a walk together.

Since joining the team, Shelby has been busy with her training. In this early stage, training includes general obedience, socialisation and exposure to lots of different, positive experiences. This work is vital to ensure that Shelby has the right temperament to be a real Therapy dog. Shelby recently achieved her Puppy Foundation and Bronze Level Award as part of the Kennel Club Good Citizen Dog Scheme.

Well done Shelby!
